Leana Vanlaere was born into a unique colony of Orions - a colony that sought to break away from traditional Orion practices of slavery and piracy and embrace a more honest style of living. This colony was known as Sigma Orionis*.
Leana was the second child to mother Aeris and father Raightus. Her older brother, Aibne went into politics and Leana applied and was accepted into Starfleet Academy in 2365.
During her 2nd year of medical training with Starfleet, her father Raightus died of an Orion cancer known as Mintaka**. Devastated, Leana took time off to recover from her loss and support her mother Aeris. She returned in 2368 and graduated in 2374.
Leana fell just shy of being in the top of her class - something she blames on an ill-fated romance with a fellow Starfleet Cadet, Kevin Rigel. It is safe to say that Cadet Rigel was entranced by Leana's Orion pheromones and little else. Leana has grown a resentment toward any kind of "relationship" (and some unresolved resentment toward men) and insists on focusing on her work - her first passion.
Following her graduation, Dr Vanlaere accepted her first position as assistant medical officer aboard the USS Bradbury in 2375. She served two years and received glowing commendations before being offered the position of Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS Thunderchild.
*Writer's note: I am taking liberties with the Orion race and what little is known about them. If anything I write conflicts with current Trek lore, I'll happily change it.
