Born at Utopia Colony as Kevin Medart, Kiera always knew she was different than the other boys. She felt out of place and often had conflicting likes and dislikes to them. She had a hard time making friends because of it. Her parents, concerned with her antisocial behavior, had her see a councilor (from October 4th, 2361 [Stardate 39712.96] to November 1st 2362 Stardate 40700.97]). The councilor diagnosed her with gender identity issues. What that meant was that Kiera didn't feel right as a boy, and felt she would be better off if she was a girl. She confronted her parents, and they supported her, bringing her to San Francisco, Earth on December 18th, 2362 {Stardate 40819.24) to get treatment, to be the girl she had always felt at heart. After the surgery and hormone production “tweaking” to get hormone levels within normal ranges for a girl, Kiera and her parents took a shuttle back to Mars on January 2nd, 2363 (Stardate 40856.95) to continue their lives.

Kiera was raised around the shipyards. Her mother was a starship designer and her father was a construction worker building the ships that her mother designed. Kiera followed her parents around often, learning more about starship design and construction before her teen years than most Starfleet officers learn in their entire careers. That exposure to the Utopia Planitia shipyards and her previous visit to San Francisco for her gender reassignment are what Kiera attributes to her decision to apply to Starfleet Academy in 2371. She passed the entrance exams and enrolled in Basic Warp Design, Subspace Geometry, Astrosciences, and Earth History, among other courses. She graduated Starfleet Academy at the top of her class in 2375.

Upon graduation of the Academy, she was assigned to Utopia Planitia, the same posting her parents were at and where she was raised. Kiera worked hard, often offering her opinion to her work crew leader (which often turned out to be the right course of action). Her team leader saw potential in her, and recommended her for promotion. after a year of her dedication and helpfulness to the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, she was promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade on August 4th, 2375 (Stardate 52413.86). Her hard work paid off again when she lead a repair team repairing and refitting the Akira-class heavy cruiser, U.S.S. Thunderchild (NCC – 63549) in 2376.

She had decided that she did not want to stay at the shipyards. She wanted to explore the galaxy. She put in a request to be transferred to the U.S.S. Thunderchild on January 1st, 2377 (Stardate 53711.21), citing her unique experience with refitting the ship and her previous experience being raised around the shipyards. The acting Captain, Commander Addison Bonham, accepted her for the position of Chief Engineer on February 19th, 2377 (Stardate 53834.4), promoting her to Lieutenant at the age of 23 to serve the post.
