Jackie F Campbell was born in 2340 to Kennard and Selina Campbell on Mars. His distant ancestors were from Scotland, including Sir Neil Campbell, who fought in the Wars of Scottish Independence. Jackie is a formal member of Clan Campbell and an honorary member of the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland (Unofficial Unit).

Both Kennard and Selina are researchers for Federation Science Bureau. Selina sits on the President's Council for Scientific Research while Kennard is a leading researcher in exploring the plant life discovered in the Gama Quadrant. They held high degrees in genetic engineering and botany. Together the pair have more than a hundred papers published regarding genetically engineered plants.

Kennard and Selina raised their son with love. They valued education and pushed Jackson to study often. They found that he was a gifted student but in high school he discovered an ability for athletic competition. He began to shift his studies from math and science to Martial arts, water polo, and Parrises Squares.

Despite having more than enough credentials to join the Federation Science Bureau, Jackson entered Starfleet Academy in 2358. The act caused a number of fights between him and his parents. His father refused to speak with him for weeks leading up to his departure for the academy but cried when his hugged Jackson goodbye. His mother had pleaded with him to change his mind and he could see heartbreak in her eyes but he never felt he lost her love. Upon graduation in 2362, Jackie was ranked fifth in his class. His parents were both in attendance and his mother seemed to beam with more pride than anyone else in the audience.

Jackson set lofty goals for himself, and hoped to reach captain before thirty-five years of age. He had dreamed of exploring the Gama Quadrant at the command of his own starship.

Jackson was a officer aboard the USS Fredrickson (NCC-42111) prior to the Dominion war as a Helms officer. Just prior to the outbreak of war, he narrow avoided a transfer to a science vessel which was set by his father. The transfer came with a promotion and would take him away from the front lines. Jackson fought the transfer and with the help of his Captain. He remained aboard serving with pride and honor throughout most of the war. He was later transfered to the USS Thunderchild (NCC-63549) where he served under Lieutenant Commander Rayne within the Operations Department. The two became very close friends as the war raged around them.

During the year of repairs, newly promoted Commander Campbell took a step away from the Thunderchild to work for Admiral Ross while repairs were being made. Jackson worked to establish relief efforts in Bajorin space as well as liaison with the Cardashians in official matters. During this year, he spent a lot of time on Deep Space Nine within Admiral Ross' headquarters aboard the station learning to become a captain, mentored by Admiral Ross himself. He was issued his orders to assume Command leadership of the USS Thunderchild in January 2377.
