"Yes sir..." Bay trailed off as Cox left the cockpit without another word.
"Well that was kinda rude." Bay said to himself. He sat on the pilot's seat and glanced at the readouts of the control console.
Everything read green.
He sighed and pursed his lips as he pulled out his pocket droid, placing it on top of the console.
Barely bigger than his fist, the little droid was pretty useful to have around. It usually resembled a simple silver sphere, but when activated, it would reveal it's spider-like limbs. It had some utilities Bay thought useful: a holographic projector/recorder, multiple computer interface ports, voice recognition, route finding, and limb coordination software.
Truthfully, the little thing was really nothing more than just a fancy mobile data-pad. No real intelligence like a "true" droid. But Bay couldn't help but smile at the little quirks the machine had accumulated over it's development. How it would tilt it's body in a way similar to someone tilting their head when awaiting commands.
Bay smiled now as it did it's familiar tilt.
"So, how've you been liking our new job?"
The droid stood there unmoving.
Bay grinned and said. "New entry please."
The droid beeped and a soft red light began blinking from the top of it's body as it straightened and pointed it's recording equipment at Bay's face.
"It's barely been a day since I've taken this new job and I'm still overwhelmed. Cox seems like a decent person to work for. A little formal. Probably a professional military man or something. He seems to trust me to make my own decisions and projects, but I don't know why they made me the head of robotics. From what I've seen, there is no shortage of talented people in engineering. I sure hope I didn't bump anyone from a promotion or something."
Bay peeked behind him. The cockpit's door was still sealed.
"I still feel like someone must have made a mistake. How can someone like me be in charge of anybody like a professional engineer? I'm no robotics officer, I'm just some junker droid mechanic."
Bay fell silent as he stared out at the swirling streaking blue outside the ship.
"They're probably going to catch on soon enough," he said, "Someone will say, 'Who brought this son of a bantha onboard? Toss him out an airlock.'"
Bay looked down at the little droid, "I supposed we should enjoy it while it lasts though. Get some new servos for you huh? A nice oil bath? Maybe even give you some up-to-date memory drives?"
Bay slouched down and turned his gaze back at the swirling light outside the ship.
"It'd be nice if does last though. Build something really amazing for once, but I'm not stupid enough to think it will."
He turned to the droid, "End entry."
The red light dimmed and the little droid curled up into a ball. Bay turned his focus to monitoring the controls and glancing outside at the swirling blue. Time seemed to stretch as he became lost in his thoughts. He didn't even notice when he looked down and found the pocket droid resting on his lap. A small mechanical whirring emanating from it.
Bay thought it almost sounded like purring.
